Patriotic Ombre Cake Rezept

Zutaten

  •     Makes 16 servings 
  • 2   pkgs. white cake mix, like Duncan Hines (16.5 oz. each) 
  • 1   pkg. cherry gelatin (3 oz.) 
  • 1   pkg. berry blue gelatin (3 oz.) 
  •     red and blue liquid food coloring 
  • 3   pkgs. white or vanilla frosting, divided (16 oz. each) 
  • 1   pkg. marshmallow crème, like Fluff (16 oz.)

1. Heat oven to 350ºF. Grease four 9” cake pans. Divide each package of gelatin into 3 Tbs. 1 tsp., 2 Tbs. ¾ tsp. and 1 Tbs. ¼ tsp. portions. Prepare cake mixes according to package directions. Divide batter between 9 bowls (about 1-cup batter in each)

2. Add 3 Tbs. + 1 tsp. cherry gelatin to 1 bowl, stir in ¾ tsp. red food coloring

3. Add 2 Tbs. + 3/4 tsp. cherry gelatin to 1 bowl, stir in ½ tsp. red food coloring

4. Add 1 Tbs. + 1/4 tsp. cherry gelatin to 1 bowl, stir in ¼ tsp. food coloring

5. Repeat with blue gelatin and blue food coloring

6. Stir 1 drop red food coloring into 1 bowl and 1 drop blue food coloring into 1 bowl. (At this point you should have 4 red and 4 blue cake layers that go from dark to really light and 1 completely white layer.) Note to food stylist: for the darkest 3 red cake layers you may need to add additional food color to get more color separation

7. Transfer batter to greased cake pans. Bake 10 min. or until done. Let stand 10 min. Unmold and let cool completely. Wash pans, grease and repeat with remaining batter to create 9 cake layers

8. Set aside 1½ cups frosting. In electric mixer, beat together remaining frosting and marshmallow crème until smooth. Place darkest blue cake layer on platter. Spread with ½ cup frosting mixture. Repeat with remaining blue layers (from darkest to lightes). Then white layer and 4 red layers (going from lightest to darkest. Place white layer atop blue layers. Spread with frosting. Coat top and side of cake with remaining frosting mixture. Chill 1 hr. Using pastry bag fitted with star tip, pipe decorative borders on cake and in center with reserved frosting. Garnish with paper firecrackers/pom-poms
